An important part of Dr. Grey's practice involves redoing failed vasectomy reversals or redoing vasectomy reversals
which were attempted by other doctors. Our success rates for vasectomy reversal redo cases is very similar to those for "virgin vasectomy reversals." Dr. Grey has performed successful reversal surgery on patients who have been told that "another reversal would be impossible."
If a surgeon
does not do vasectomy reversal surgery almost daily, he cannot possibly maintain the degree of proficiency required to perform vasectomy reversals properly. This accounts for many failures. Experts in any field cannot maximize their skills without daily practice.
Doing the vasectomy reversal without a microscope is also a common reason for failure. Experts agree, optical loupes (magnifying glasses) are not adequate. A microscope MUST be used.
Since the opening that carries the sperm is only about 1/100th of an inch in diameter, the precision granted by the use of a surgical microscope is essential. The suture material we use is invisible to the naked eye, having a thickness of 1/1000th of an inch.
Vasectomy reversals can fail for a variety of other reasons. Some failures are preventable and others are not. Often, scarring occurs at the site of the anastomosis (connection). This scarring can be due to misalignment or sperm leakage from imperfect suturing, abnormal healing, or use of electrical cautery.
Rarely, we see an unsuccessful vasectomy reversal which is due to a vas that has pulled apart. For that reason, we recommend wearing supportive briefs for at least 14 days after surgery. This prevents the healing tissues from having to bear the weight of the testicles when a patient is upright.
Use of a microscope allows Dr. Grey to change the operation from a simple vasectomy reversal to a vaso-epididymostomy (VE), if necessary.
