The stump of each vas deferens is located and dissected back to clean, fresh tissue with micro-scalpels. Each vas deferens has the diameter of thin spaghetti, but the opening through which the sperm travel is 100 times smaller. Using his Zeiss microscope, Dr. Grey puts the vas deferens back together in layers with 10-0 micro-sutures. The first layer attaches the openings. The second approximates the muscle tissue in the walls. The third layer attaches the fibrous and vascular tissue that makes up the outer surfaces. When the micro-surgical connections are complete, Dr. Grey surrounds each one with a sleeve of fat. This fat, found next to the vas deferens, is sewn around the connections. As healing occurs, blood vessels grow from the fat into these areas adding greater blood supply. This speeds healing and reduces scarring.
